2006 was an incredible year for Scottish sport. Our Commonwealth Games team won the hearts of the nation and the national rugby and football teams started delivering the kind of results that made the world take notice. In amongst all of this sporting triumph Scotland's bid for the 2014 Commonwealth Games really started to take shape. The Back Scotland's Bid campaign which the First Minister launched back at the start of 2006 delivered unprecedented results. Scots everywhere signed up to show their support in their hundreds of thousands. In just one year 1.5 million pledges had been received: a fact that didn't go unnoticed by the people who will have the final say on the Host City.
First Minister, Jack McConnell, launches the 2014 Back the Bid Campaign.
2007 is the year that those voters make their decision. On November 9 at around 10.30 UK time, Glasgow will know if it has done enough. The 71 voters will cast their vote at a meeting in the Sri Lankan capital, Colombo. This gives the people working on the bid just 10 short months to make their case.
So what will happen between now and decision day?
Regular visitors to www.glasgow2014.com will know that over the past few months the Bid Team have been travelling round the Commonwealth, meeting the voters and telling them about our plans. So far we've met around 50 of the voters face to face. In the next few months we'll make sure that we meet them all.

St Vincent & the Grenadines: Derek Casey (Bid Director), Keith Joseph (Sec Gen), Louise Martin (Chairman CGCS), Trevor Bailey (President).
At the same time, we have to finish the all important Bid Document. This contains detailed plans about what a Scottish Games would look like. Everything from the sports to venues, the transport to doping controls has to be in this document. It has been a mammoth task getting it ready - but we are almost there. It will be handed over to the Commonwealth Games Federation on May 9th in London. And that will be an important event! Keep your eye on the website for more details.
After we hand in the Bid Document, we will be bringing the Commonwealth to Glasgow.
First off, we will face the formal Evaluation Commission sometime around the start of the summer. This group of people will look at the City, the plans for the Games and, importantly, what the level of public support is. We're doing extremely well in that area so far – but we can do so more.
It's as simple as this. The more people who pledge their support, the greater our chance of winning.
After the Evaluation Commission leaves we'll be inviting a representative from each of the 70 other Commonwealth countries to come to Scotland. We'll have more details on what they'll be doing in the coming weeks and months.
Needless to say we need to make sure that they see our City and our country at its best. There will be a role for all Scots in this objective.
And the finally, we go to Sri Lanka for the all important decision day.
There we find out if we have done enough to bring the Games to Scotland.
So the message is clear. It’s going to be a tough year, but one that everyone can play a part in. If you haven't done it yet, join the team. Show the world how passionate you are about bringing the Games to Scotland in 2014.
