COMMUTERS IN SCOTLAND GIVEN THE CHANCE TO HEAR THE RESULT

Commuters don’t have to worry about missing the result of which city will host the Commonwealth Games in 2014, as transport providers across the country have united to make sure people out and about and on the go hear about the result.

Travellers on trains, planes, taxis, buses, ferries and even Glasgow Underground will see and hear the result through tannoy systems, big screens and special announcements made at train stations, airports, and on buses across Scotland at lunchtime on the 9th.

Only Scotland and Nigeria remain in the race to host the Commonwealth Games in 2014. On Friday, 9th November, all 71 members of the Commonwealth will gather in Sri Lanka at the General Assembly of the Commonwealth Games Federation to cast their vote.

First ScotRail, which daily runs thousands of train services, will announce the result on customer information screens at stations and on trains. And First Bus, which operates thousands of buses, will have electronic displays showing the result at bus stops - and drivers will also hear the result while travelling on their routes.

First is a Major Supporter of the Bid for Glasgow to host the Games, and over the past year several of its trains and buses have been branded with fantastic images of athletes, helping to spread the message across the country.

Mary Dickson, managing director of First ScotRail, said: “Having supported the Bid with such enthusiasm, it is only right and proper that our customers receive the news at the earliest opportunity.

Network Rail is also playing its part – owners of Central Station in Glasgow and Waverley Station in Edinburgh, passengers moving through both stations will hear about the decision in a special announcement over the tannoys. A massive banner is currently hanging in Central Station over the main timetables, giving everyone the chance to remember 9th November. Raymond Johnstone, Network Rail's General Manager for Scotland West commented:
"Glasgow Central station is a vital transport hub for Glasgow and we're delighted to support the city's bid for the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
“We'll be sure to let our passengers know if and when the good news filters through on Friday."

Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen airports (operated by BAA) will all carry messages letting tourists and travellers find out if Scotland has been successful, with on-screen information and a special tannoy announcement to let travellers know the result. Passengers in the ten airports operated by Highlands and Islands Airports Ltd, from Islay to Orkney, will also hear the decision.
BAA Scotland spokesman Donald Morrison said today: “The whole of Scotland is behind Glasgow’s bid to secure the 2014 Commonwealth Games.  As Scotland’s gateway airports, we’re proud to support Glasgow’s bid.  We’ll ensure our passengers know the result as soon as it happens, with a special announcement at all three airports and on-screen messages throughout our terminals.”

In Glasgow, passengers travelling by taxi at the time of the decision will hear first-hand from their driver. Kevin Deane of Glasgow Taxis said their drivers would be over the moon with a positive result for the city.
He said: “As soon as we get the result we will relate that from our control office to all 970 taxis so that they can tell their passengers, and maybe even toot the horn for a good result. As we get closer to D day it is getting really exciting. Lots of the drivers have 2014 stickers and a few have taken delegates around the city when they were here in the summer, and a good result for the city would be brilliant.”

Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) confirmed that their passengers will be kept in the know with screen messages, public announcements and online news at their underground stations, at Buchanan Bus Station and at the Glasgow Airport Travel Centre.
SPT’s Director of Subway Operations, David Wallace said: “If it’s a positive result for Glasgow I’m sure everyone will want to shout it from the rooftops, and we’ll be happy to play our part in that on the Subway. We’re keeping our fingers crossed that Friday will turn out to be a wonderful day for the city.”
And even at ports and on ferries where there are TV’s, Caledonian MacBrayne will put on the announcement shows so that passengers can share in the excitement. Caledonian MacBrayne said that where possible ferry captains would also let their passengers know the result by tannoy announcements onboard. The ferry company sails to 24 Scottish destinations from Arran to Lewis.
Glasgow 2014 Bid Drector Derek Casey, speaking from Sri Lanka, said he was delighted that so many people on the move would get to hear the result. “Win or lose we believe we have put forward a strong bid for the Commonmwealth Games in 2014. It is great to know that so many people in Scotland will get to hear the result, especially if they can’t get to a TV or go online when the bid decision is reached.
“We are in a tough fight and having the support of so many different organisations is a real boost.”
