GAVIN FLIES THE FLAG FOR THE 2014 COMMONWEALTH GAMES BID

Gavin McCurdy, 7, from Houston, was presented with his very own flag design at Houston Primary School by Claire Wilson, marketing manager from Highland Spring, after winning a Glasgow 2014 competition in the Sunday Mail.

Developed in association with Highland Spring, one of the six major supporters of Glasgow’s 2014 Commonwealth Games Bid, the competition urged kids from across Scotland to design a Commonwealth Games flag.

Gavin’s colourful and striking design was selected from more than 500 entries by a high profile judging panel, including Elaine C Smith, Liz McColgan, Sunday Mail editor Allan Rennie and Highland Spring marketing director Sally Stanley.

The judges congratulated Gavin on a truly outstanding design – which represented all of the keys elements of Glasgow’s bid, including sport and friendship.

Glasgow 2014 bid director Derek Casey congratulated Gavin for all his hard work. "Gavin had a great design for his flag which brought together everything we were looking for into something really fun and interesting. Although he is only seven, Gavin obviously has a great eye for art and design!

"We are entering the final stretch of the race before we find out if Glasgow is to host the Commonwealth Games in 2014. Young people of Gavin's age are the very generation we want to be inspired by sport and excited by the idea of the Games coming to Scotland.  I'm so pleased that Gavin and his school are helping to Back the Bid for Glasgow with their winning entry.

"I also have to say a big thank you to all the other young people across the country who took the time to enter the competition run by our Major Supporter Highland Spring.  There is so much creativity out there, and in my eyes, everyone is a winner for getting involved."

Commenting on the design, Sally Stanley said:  “Gavin’s design was really inspiring. He cleverly used the Glasgow 2014 colours and the thistle logo is great for promoting Scotland globally.”

Gavin was presented with his own personal flag and one for his school.  The school’s headmistress Myra Hamilton is now planning to display the flag for all pupils to enjoy.

As part of his prize, Gavin will also take part in a tennis masterclass with Andy, Jamie and Judy Murray along with 35 other children.  Other Sunday Mail winners secured places on an athletics masterclass with Jamie Quarry and Gillian Cook and a rugby masterclass with Kenny Logan and Gregor Townsend.
