The Commonwealth Games Federation has today (Tuesday 4 September) released its technical evaluation report on the cities bidding to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

The key points of the report in regards to the Glasgow bid state that the City has:
• World class venues for competition, with development of new venues leaving a positive legacy for City and Country.
• An excellent games village which fits in with the wider regeneration strategies
• Strong existing transport infrastructure, which provides the basis for the efficient and effective delivery of a Games
• An Organising Committee budget that is of high quality, with requisite contingencies included
• A well developed and thorough environment programme, resulting in a Games with an overall low environmental impact

Stewart Maxwell, Minister for Communities and Sport said:
“I’m delighted that the Evaluation Report recognises how much hard work and enthusiasm has gone into preparing Scotland’s Commonwealth Games bid.
"The report says that Glasgow has shown it has the ability to stage the 2014 Commonwealth Games to a standard which would continue to enhance the image and prestige of the Games"
“This is another hugely positive step which I hope will help Glasgow secure this once-in-a-lifetime event.
“With just two months to go until the members of the Commonwealth Games Federation gather for their summit in Colombo to choose the winner, I hope members will now be as convinced as we are that Glasgow is the perfect venue for the Games in 2014.”
Steven Purcell, Leader of Glasgow City Council said:
“This report backs up what we have been trying to say all along. Given the chance, Glasgow will host the best Games the Commonwealth has ever seen.
“I am delighted that the Evaluation Commission recognised that all the infrastructure is in place or committed and that the bid’s finances are sound. They also recognised that our plans will leave behind a legacy for everyone in our city.
“We are in the home straight. We know what we have to do – and there will be no complacency. It is time to go forward and bring the prize home.”
Louise Martin, Chair of the Commonwealth Games Council for Scotland said:
“We are delighted that the Evaluation Commission has recognised our ambition for Scotland to host an incredible, sustainable and memorable Commonwealth Games in 2014.
“From the very beginning we’ve worked closely with our Athletes’ Commission to make sure that these Games are designed by the athletes for the athletes.
“This has not been lost on the Evaluation Commission. They have recognised that we have looked at every detail of our Games - from venues to transport to culture to make sure that should we win, everyone who comes to Scotland in 2014 will have the performance and time of their lives.
“We will use every minute of every day we have left before the vote in Sri Lanka to continue to promote our Games. We will not take our foot off the gas.”
