Glasgow has once again shown that it has what it takes to put on a world class sporting and cultural event, Glasgow 2014 Bid Director Derek Casey said today.
He was speaking after Glasgow successfully held the Fresh n’ Lo Great Scottish Run 10K and half marathon road races.
An estimated eighteen thousand people pounded the streets of Glasgow during both races and as well as organising the race itself, the City arranged for a huge Entertainment Village for the thousands of spectators who cheered family and friends across the finish line.
Derek Casey said: "This has been a great weekend for the City. Today’s 10k and half marathon have been an outstanding success, with Glasgow's streets transformed into a giant running track for the day. Over eighteen thousand people took part, making it one of the biggest and best races ever held in our country.

"The atmosphere at Glasgow Green was electric from the moment Isaac Macharia and Arysei Peninah crossed the finish line and it continued as thousands more followed in their tracks throughout the morning. It showed what a wonderful setting it will be for the finish of the marathon and road cycling events during the 2014 Games. And the Entertainment Village gave visitors to the Green the chance to do what Glasgow does best – have fun!
"As this successful event highlights once again, Glasgow is a sporting city; a city ready to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games. With less than 70 days until we learn if Glasgow has won the right to stage the biggest multi-sports event we could ever hope to host, we have shown that we have the ability to put on a show that would be an unforgettable experience for everyone who takes part."
“Bidding for the Games has been rather like running a marathon. We are now so close to the finishing line. I am sure the community will continue to provide extraordinary support right up to the final decision on 9th November”
