Victory Ceremony

Victory Ceremonies are one of the most prestigious aspects of the Games. They are a chance for athletes to formally celebrate their success, and allow their home nation to be united in celebration as the National Anthem is played and the National Flag raised.

The presentation of the medals to the athletes at the competition venues is steeped in tradition and protocol. Winning a medal is an extraordinary example of personal achievement and an opportunity for intense national pride. The Victory Ceremony is the opportunity to highlight the pride and achievement of the athletes and their nation.

Thousands of spectators in venues and through a global television audience will watch the Victory Ceremonies. These are great opportunities not only to share in the athletes’ success but also to present exciting and festive ceremonies which showcase the Games and Scotland.

Victory Ceremony Protocol

A Victory Ceremony usually occurs soon after a medal event finishes. The athletes who come first, second and third participate in the Victory Ceremony. Starting in turn with the third placed athlete, each is announced to the audience as they ascend the victory podium and receive their victory medals: gold for first place, silver for second and bronze for third. The gold medallist stands in the middle of the victory podium, on a higher section than that of second and third. Once the medals are presented the flags of each athlete’s nation are raised simultaneously and the National Anthem of the gold medallist’s nation is played.
