Welcome to the Delhi Handover

Where were you when Scotland performed in front of the Commonwealth? Were you one of the 348 cast members? Were you part of the 60,000-strong Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium crowd? Maybe you were one of the 1 billion watching at home?

On October 14th 2010, Glasgow became the official host of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. The occasion was marked by the Delhi Flag Handover Ceremony, part of the Closing Ceremony for the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games.

The Delhi Flag Handover Ceremony was split into two, very different, parts. The first portion saw the Commonwealth Games Federation flag lowered by Delhi officials, folded and passed on to Glasgow Lord Provost Bob Winter; a symbolic gesture of Commonwealth Games ownership.

A creative set piece followed, with 348 volunteer cast members, under the guidance of the world’s top creative talent. Choreographers, costume designers, composers and production experts collaborated to celebrate Scotland’s history and the spirit of innovation it’s now famous for, in a mass choreographed dance performance.

As the Commonwealth Games Federation flag flies high over Glasgow, where it will remain for the next three years, it acts as a constant reminder of the great honour bestowed on the city.

Over the next three years the people of Glasgow and Scotland will continue on their journey to the Games. Ready for the 6,500 athletes. Ready for the expectant eyes of the Commonwealth. Ready to host one of the greatest Commonwealth Games yet.
