Gemma, in her own words on working at Glasgow
2014
I worked on the Bid team that won the right for Glasgow to host
the 2014 CommowealthCommonwealth Games, and I wanted to be
part of the Organising Committee because the Bid was such a
fantastic project to work on. The excitement generated within the
city, after we won the right to host the Games, made me want to
continue to be involved.I didn't want the journey to end.
Working at the Organising Committee is really fast-paced.
There’s always a real buzz about the office, and plenty going on.
It’s definitely not your conventional nine-to-five job and every
day really is different.
For me, it’s the people that make working at the OC such a great
place to be. There’s a real diverse mix of people; some who have
Games experience, but a lot without. Everyone brings a wealth of
experience in their own areas, that complements the mix, to make
the team work. We’re all really passionate about the Games and we
work really hard to deliver.
In the two and a half years I’ve been at the OC, I’ve had
numerous opportunities and I’ve progressed career-wise. In the
short time I’ve been at the OC my role has changed twice, with each
move being a step up.
The biggest opportunity I’ve had since joining the OC was the
opportunity to go out to Delhi for the 2010 Commonwealth Games.
This was my first time attending a Games and it was just an
absolutely brilliant experience;. To see how all the hard work and
planning that we’re doing in Glasgow, just now, comes together into
such a great event that transforms a city was amazing.
I know that working at the Organising Committee is a once in a
lifetime opportunity and I realise how extremely lucky I am to have
the opportunity to work within such a unique organisation.
I hope the skills that I’ve gained to date, and will continue to
acquire over the next couple of years, will stand me in good stead
when it comes to moving on after 2014.
