Stories will be told, performances will enthral, and memories will be made
As the Queen’s Baton Relay arrives back into Scotland on 14 June, performances and celebrations will take place in communities across the country in celebration.
Culture 2014 will add to the vibrancy, fun and anticipation, connecting communities and visitors to people, places, and ideas inspired by the Commonwealth.
Among the shows to enjoy along the way will be The Pokey Hat. Stories from Glasgow's east end will be celebrated with puppetry, music and storytelling all performed in an ice cream van for this fun and fascinating show created by Clare McGarry the Artistic Director of the Grinagog Theatre, composer Oliver Searle and writer Martin O’Connor.
Actor Tam Dean Burn and friends will set off an adventure across Scotland, in which they will endeavour to read all 195 books and plays, and sing all the songs written by former Children’s Laureate Julia Donaldson to children along the route of the Queen’s Baton Relay. Trying to travel as much as possible by bicycle; Tam will continue his challenge throughout Glasgow during Festival 2014, until 03 August.
The Commonwealth Youth Circus will bring high octane, spectacular performances showcasing a contemporary circus. Boasting the specialist art forms of stilt-acrobalance and acrobatic parkour to locations along the route.
The company which features specially recruited young performers have been in training for nine months for these highly anticipated appearances. The project, created in collaboration between Bright Night International, Glasgow Parkour and Aerial Edge in partnership with youth circus charity Pocket Circus and the Edinburgh Mela.
Choral performances, shows on bicycles and readings by leading writers are among the other treats in store for families, friends and local residents.
People across Scotland will be joining in with the excitement of the Glasgow 2014 Cultural Programme as it links up with the Queen’s Baton Relay as the XX Commonwealth Games come ever closer.
