The East End Social – Chemikal Underground's ambitious music and community-engagement project – will bring events to locations throughout the east of Glasgow.
Easterhouse, Bridgeton, Calton, Dennistoun, Dalmarnock and Rutherglen will all host a plethora of music entertainment, from tea dances to bat-box workshops.
These events run to the end of August and form part of the Glasgow 2014 Cultural Programme, welcoming the world to Glasgow and the biggest cultural and sporting event Scotland has ever hosted.
Events throughout the East End Social calendar include:
> The East End Social Tea Dances – the big band sound returns to the iconic Barrowland Ballroom for a spectacular weekend of tea dances on 3–4 May 2014, with music from That Swing Sensation.
> Folk fans are in for a treat on 3 May 2014 as the Barrowlands hosts McGinn meets Seeger and McColl – a celebration of the extraordinary songwriting of Calton's own Matt McGinn, and of folk luminaries Pete Seeger and Ewan McColl.
> The Bowler's Bar in Bridgeton hosts a showcase of The Pictish Trail's record label Lost Map on 25 May, and a two day residence for The New Mendicants on 5–6 August 2014.
> The Optimo (Espacio) Barrowlands Revue heralds a Scottish live debut for Norwegian DJ/producer Todd Terje with support from Optimo, Ben UFO (DJ), Tim Sweeney (DJ) and Golden Teacher (live) from 17.00 on Sunday 2 May 2014.
> The Duke Street Expo 2014 on 31 May 2014 features an eclectic array of pop-up performances, DJ sets and showpiece concerts.
> The Nectarine No 9 perform their seminal 1995 album ‘Saint Jack’ at Rutherglen Town Hall on 7 June 2014.
> Mungo’s Hi Fi bring their soundsystem to Alexandra Park’s Gala Day on 21 June 2014.
> Neu! Reekie! perform their fast-paced fusion of spoken word, animation and music at Platform on 19 July 2014.
> Penman’s Jazzmen, one of Scotland’s foremost traditional jazz bands, will play at The Bowler’s Bar on 20 and 25 July 2014.
> SAY Award Winner RM Hubbert performs an intimate gig at Rutherglen Town Hall on 8 August 2014.
> The Last Big Weekend at Richmond Park on 30–31 August 2014 features Mogwai, Hudson Mohawke, Optimo and Numbers with more to be confirmed in the coming weeks.
