Ronnie McGowan
Feature

Ronnie McGowan has been playing table tennis for over 40 years. He told us why it’s a great sport to both play and watch, and who to look out for at Glasgow 2014.

Why are you a fan of table tennis?

It’s an exciting, dynamic game, and one for all ages and all skill levels. It's never too late to pick up a bat. Knightswood Table Tennis Club has given me a very warm welcome – it’s a friendly club where you can get great instruction and games against quality players. And it's fun!

What’s the best thing about watching table tennis live?

Trying to work out how they get the spin on a serve.

Who’s your table tennis hero?

Two big players from the past – Chester Barnes and Desmond Douglas.

What’s your best memory from watching or taking part in table tennis?

Being lunchtime fodder for a schoolboy international in the 70s!!

Which table tennis star should people look out for at Glasgow 2014?

People should look out for Olufunke Oshonaike from Nigeria. It was her kind words at Heathrow last summer that encouraged me to start playing again.

Why should people who don’t know anything about table tennis buy tickets to watch it at Glasgow 2014?

They'll enjoy the spectacle of fast-moving games, player against player and Scotstoun is a nice venue.
