Glasgow 2014 Limited, the Organising Committee (OC) for the Commonwealth Games to be held in Glasgow between 23rd July and 3rd August 2014, has today announced the appointment of John Denholm to the Chair of its major marketing committee.
The Joint Marketing Committee (JMC) comprises three representatives each from Commonwealth Games Scotland, the Hosts for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, and Glasgow 2014 Limited. John Denholm will join the JMC as one of the OC’s representatives and will act as chair. The Commonwealth Games Federation are also represented at meetings of the JMC.
After graduating from St Andrews University John Denholm started his career in Marketing at Boots and then Scottish & Newcastle. In 1984 he founded the Leith Agency, which grew to become Scotland’s leading advertising and communications agency with offices in Edinburgh and London. He sold the business in 2005 and currently runs Denholm Associates a specialist search and recruitment agency operating in Marketing and Communications. He is also non-executive Chairman of Ambergreen, one of the UK’s leading internet marketing agencies and is a founder of Jelly TV, a new internet television company. In the past, John has served as Chairman of Creative Edinburgh and as a member of the Scottish Arts Council.
Announcing the appointment, John Donnelly, Director of Marketing and Sponsorship of Glasgow 2014 said:

The Joint Marketing Committee is a crucial forum for the development of the Games’ commercial plan and I know we will benefit hugely from John Denholm’s vast knowledge, skills and network in the marketing world.”

2. The Joint Marketing Committee (JMC) has responsibility to oversee the production of a Joint Marketing Plan between the body that represents Scotland as the host nation, Commonwealth Games Scotland, and the Glasgow 2014 Organising Committee.
The Plan will cover the exploitation of TV, radio, internet, licensing and sponsorship rights for the 2014 Games, and also the marketing of rights of first refusal to the 2018 (or future) Games, and ongoing licensing and sponsorship agreements. The Plan will also detail all aspects of sponsorship, licensing and other marketing activities including product category descriptions, the rights, benefits and opportunities to be granted, timeframe for entry to markets and the appointment of any marketing agents for these rights.
3. Responsibilities of Glasgow 2014 Ltd. include delivering the sports programme, monitoring the development of new and improved infrastructure, ensuring all venues are Games-ready and recruiting and training the 15,000 volunteers needed for the Games.
4. The Glasgow 2014 Games will be the biggest multi-sports event that Scotland has ever hosted, bringing over 6,500 athletes and officials from 71 countries to the city to compete in 17 different sports in 13 venues over 11 days between 23rd July and 3rd August 2014. With a budget of £373 million (at April 2007 prices), including public investment of £298m, the Commonwealth Games are expected to bring significant sporting, economic and social benefits to Glasgow and Scotland.
