Handover Ceremony Cast members fly to Delhi

Cast members from all over Scotland have travelled to Glasgow and Edinburgh airports to make the next leg of their journey to Delhi, as they prepare to perform in the JLN Stadium on Thursday when Glasgow officially becomes the next Host City of the Commonwealth Games.

The 352 cast members will be spending the short period of time they are in Delhi making their final preparations before making their way to the Stadium on Thursday. The cast come from all walks of life, represent many ages and many have little or no performance experience. For many it is the first time they have travelled outside of Europe.

The creative performance will showcase the best of Scotland’s heritage and history, and will bring to life the Glasgow 2014 brand and give a flavour of the Games that will be staged in four years time.

John Scott, Chief Executive of Glasgow 2014 said:

“The 352-strong cast have travelled from all over Scotland to proudly represent their country at the Flag Handover Ceremony of the Delhi 2010 Handover Ceremony on Thursday. Each volunteer has spent months preparing for what will truly be a once in a lifetime experience and I can’t wait to see all the hard work in action on the field of play.”

Deputy Leader of Glasgow City Council and the Executive Member for the Commonwealth Games, Councillor Archie Graham said:

“It will be a very special Handover Ceremony, and it has been fantastic to see the excitement amongst the cast in the build up to their departures. When we embarked on this journey we wanted to not only create a performance that would show Scotland and Glasgow’s proud cultural heritage but also one that would create a real and lasting legacy.

“We have people from every corner of the country taking part, many of whom have had no experience of dance, let alone on a world stage. As well as taking leading roles in the performance they will go on to act as ambassadors for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

“Glasgow and the whole of Scotland can be very proud of those taking part. It will be an emotional event for all those involved and we wish them all well as they prepare to take centre stage over in Delhi.”

1. The eight minute performance for the closing ceremony has been created by Unspun, the internationally renowned creative team who have delivered multiple prestigious Olympic,Paralympic and Commonwealth Games Opening and Closing Ceremonies.

2. Project managed by Glasgow Life on behalf of the Glasgow 2014, volunteers were from education, sports, arts and volunteering networks. The Delhi 2010 Flag Handover Ceremony will be performed in front of 60,000 spectators at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and an estimated one billion people worldwide.
