Scotland’s schools finalise best plaid plans

Pupils urged to submit final entries as closing date approaches

Primary and secondary school pupils all over Scotland are being urged to make a sprint to the finish line in a competition to design the official tartan for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

The competition, which opened on 9 May and is being run in conjunction with Learning and Teaching Scotland, closes one week from today – on Friday 17 June - and although hundreds of entries have already flooded in via the online “tartan generator”, Glasgow 2014 expects a flurry of final submissions over the next seven days .

Over the six-week duration of the competition, schools are being encouraged to get in on Games-fever by running their own tartan contests, before submitting the final entry which will be considered against other schools’ entries from across Scotland.

Glasgow 2014 Chief Executive, John Scott, said:

“The official Glasgow 2014 tartan will form an important symbol of our Games as tartan is such an intrinsic part of Scottish identity.

“I am delighted that children from all over the country are getting excited about Glasgow 2014 and I hope to see many more submit their final entries with only one week of the competition left to go.”

Glasgow 2014 is looking for designs that reflect the values of the Commonwealth Games movement, of Glasgow 2014 and of Scotland.

The winning tartan is likely to enjoy a high profile during Glasgow 2014 and could feature in specific branding, merchandise and ceremonies.

The winning tartan from each school will be shortlisted and then judged by a panel before the chosen design is developed into the final tartan by Highlandwear manufacturer Gaelic Themes.
