Volunteer in Focus – Karen Wray

Karen Wray

What’s your occupation?

Further Education Manager/Tutor.

Where do you live?

Jersey, Channel Islands.

Are people in Jersey excited about Glasgow 2014?

Not yet – they will be when I start telling them about my volunteering.

Have you volunteered before?

Yes – local events and London 2012.

What’s your best memory from London 2012?

It's really difficult to pick out a particular one. There was a fantabulous atmosphere everywhere I went – the Olympic Village, the Olympic Park, on public transport and in Central London. I spent five weeks working as an assistant to Team Indonesia for London 2012 and one day I also got to hold medals before they had been won. Wow!

What have you learnt from volunteering?

People from hugely diverse backgrounds can get along and contribute to something special.

Are you planning to volunteer at Glasgow 2014?

Yes please. I have applied.

If so, what are you most looking forward to?

Being there, rather than watching the action on TV and wishing I was there in person.

How would you give the friendliest welcome to people at the Games?

Just be myself.

Which sports star would you most like to see the Games?

Nicola Adams – what a role model for the girlies.

Which venue would you most like to be stationed at as a volunteer?

Open water swimming at Loch Ness would be fun. Is that a possibility?

Which sporting competition can’t you wait to see at the Games?

I will probably watch everything and get totally addicted to the lot.
