Anna Smrckova

There have been some amazing pledges made for our Sport Your Trainers campaign, but one Facebook fan’s pledge and enthusiasm for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games really stood out!

Anna Smrckova is a 20 year old Biology student at St Andrews University and a keen sports player; we caught up with Anna for an update on her pledge and what she’s been up to since becoming our “Fan of the Week”.

Anna has come up with a novel idea on how to spread the ‘Sport Your Trainers’ word: “My Sport Your Trainers pledge is to wear my trainers to my lectures on Commonwealth Day; on top of that I also plan to co-ordinate my clothes with a white, red, green, yellow and blue outfit, promoting the Games in great fashion!

“I am also hoping that my fellow St Andrews students and residents get on board with the campaign and that my Commonwealth Day outfit will increase awareness and enthusiasm for the Games. Lots of my friends are involved too and we are really excited to Sport our Trainers on 12 March”.

We loved Anna’s original pledge so much after featuring her on our official Facebook page. Anna’s encouraging comments and subsequent wall-posts has made her a great ambassador for the Games:

“Being ‘Fan of the Week’ has encouraged me to sign up for the 6 mile Sport Relief run on the 25th March this year too, which I am really looking forward to.

“I am really excited about the Commonwealth Games; it’s going to be a great event and having grown up in Glasgow I know the city will host the Games in a fantastic way. I cannot wait to see some of the events at Glasgow 2014; if I have the chance I would particularly like to see the hockey. Watching the Internationals play would be amazing, especially as I have played hockey since school and continue to play for my University’s 1st XI.”

We can’t thank Anna enough for supporting the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games in her unique way and pledging to Step Up with Sport Your Trainers. Good luck Anna and keep us posted on all of your successes!

Provan Family

We’ve had an incredible response to our Sport Your Trainers campaign, and activity on our official Facebook page, www.facebook.com/glasgow2014, has been amazing. Pledges have come from far and wide and we’ve even crowned some of our supporters as “Fan of the Week” due to their brilliant pledges and enthusiasm for the Games.

We thought we’d catch up with previous “Fans of the Week”, the Provan Family, from Glasgow, to find out how they are getting on with Sporting Their Trainers. We spoke to mum, Jennifer Provan, who has ensured the family have stepped up their activity levels:

Provan Family

“We’ve ditched the car in favour of trainers ever since we found out Glasgow 2014 had picked us as Fans of the Week, walking to and from school every day.

“The kids were over the moon to be featured on your Facebook page and I was instructed to print out their photograph to show proudly to their classmates”. Jennifer and husband, Graeme, have three children in all; Lindsay, aged 10, Jessica, 6, and Harrison, 4, and the whole family are all behind Games:

“I think it’s fantastic that the Commonwealth Games are being held in Glasgow. It’s a great honour for the city and Glaswegians are world-renowned for their friendliness so we will do the Games proud.

“The kids’ have all got behind the Games by choosing their favourite sport from the 17 sports included, and although our initial pledge was to go swimming at least twice a week (a favourite activity of my daughter Lindsay), we’ve also taken up cycling at Jessica’s request, with most weekends spent at the park on our bikes .Harrison is learning all about rugby with his Dad.

Even on blustery days we are making sure the kids are active as much as possible, and on 12 March we will be proudly Sporting Our Trainers all day. The kids have all pledged to continue with all our activities, and more, after Commonwealth Day, so it’s really been fantastic for the whole family.”

It’s great to hear of such dedication from the Provan Family and we can’t wait to see more photos and updates on their pledge over on Facebook. Good luck from all at Glasgow 2014!

Rugby Sevens

Representing your country is one of the greatest achievements for any sportsperson and to have the chance to compete in the Commonwealth Games on home turf, alongside 16 other sporting disciplines, is a once in a life time opportunity.

The finale of the eight-leg HSBC Sevens World Series comes to Murrayfield in the last weekend in May (Saturday/Sunday 28/29 May) and I’m sure that Glasgow 2014 will be a landmark occasion for all of Scotland.

Sport Your Trainers day is a great way to encourage everyone across Scotland to get behind the country’s Games and think about how they can live a healthier and more active lifestyle in the lead up to 2014 and beyond.
