Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre
(SECC) Precinct
The SECC will serve as the largest precinct venue for the
Glasgow Commonwealth Games. It will host several sports,
including Gymnastics, Boxing, Judo, Netball, Wrestling
and Weightlifting/Powerlifting as well as the venues of
the International Broadcast Centre and the Main Press
Centre.
The SECC campus, which already boasts large-scale SECC
Exhibition Halls and the famous Clyde Auditorium (known as the ‘
Armadillo’ due to its cascading, shell like shape) will also see
the addition of the new Scottish National Arena.
Opened in 1985, the venue is nestled on the banks of the River
Clyde and is one of Scotland’s most visited venues. The development
of the SECC is a key part of Glasgow’s plans for the regeneration
of the Clyde Riverside.
The Clyde Auditorium, opened in 1997, will showcase the
Weightlifting/Powerlifting competitions, while the main exhibition
halls of the SECC will host Judo, Netball (Preliminaries) and
Wrestling. The Halls will also serve as a media hub for
broadcasters and press.
The planned new building of the 12,500 seat Scottish National
Arena, due to open in 2013, will play host to the Gymnastics
(Artistic and Rhythmic) and Netball (finals) competitions. The
internationally renowned architect Sir Norman Foster has ensured
that the amphitheatre-style Arena can house a full Olympic size
gymnastics layout with spectator sightlines.
