Costume Assistant (2 Positions)

 

1. Background

On Thursday 14 October 2010, within the Closing Ceremony of the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Glasgow and Scotland will make the first public statement to the Commonwealth and the world by presenting a Handover Ceremony that will set the scene for the four years leading up to the delivery of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

 

Culture and Sport Glasgow has been engaged to project manage the development and delivery of the Handover Ceremony on behalf of, and in conjunction with, the Organising Committee of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

 

2. Role of Costume Assistant

We require a number of experienced and enthusiastic costume assistants to assist with a range of tasks for the production and successful delivery of costumes for the Handover Ceremony. The post holders will assist the Costume Designer and Costume Supervisor in all areas of preparation and presentation for the Handover Project. This will include fitting, embellishment, alteration and acquisition of garments and accessories in addition to aiding the costume department with the logistics of costuming a large-scale ceremony.

 

There are two main events that will take place in Glasgow as part of the lead up to the Handover Ceremony.  Orientation is the first gathering of the entire cast and team and this will be held on 10 and 11 June 2010.  The programme for Orientation will include presentations, seminars, workshops and team building for the cast and will include preliminary costume fittings. Then Bootcamp will take place from 20 September to 8 October 2010 which will be the intense rehearsals of the performance. During this period the costume department will finalise all costume requirements.

 

We are looking for costume assistants to join costume team to assist in the following areas:

Assist with preparation and distribution of costumes for Bootcamp 13 September to the 8 October; help establish working base, assist with cast fittings and finalisation of costumes

Assist with the finishing, alteration and maintenance of costumes during the rehearsal period

Assist with organisation and preparation of costume for transit including recording, labelling and packing

Assist with unpacking and preparation of costume in Delhi

Assist with set- up of costume base for dress rehearsals and live event in Delhi

Preparation, distribution, dressing and collection of costume and make up for cast and for live event in Delhi

Assist with distribution of uniform for specified crew in Delhi

Other duties may be assigned as required.

 

Experience / Skills

Applicants should have:

Excellent sewing and costume preparation skills

Experience of  preparation of costume & make up for large scale events

Experience of working with performers or large groups of people

Understanding of the disciplines of large scale performance and/or live events

Necessity to function under pressure in a calm and reasoned fashion.

Flexibility and ability to deal with constant change to schedules and work plans.

Good communication skills

Good organisational skills

 

Physical Requirements / Conditions

May be asked to work in exacting conditions e.g. outdoors, wet weather, heat, and for long periods

Must have flexibility with working hours to facilitate any unavoidable changes to the rehearsal and performance schedule.

 

3. Dates

 

Sep: 2-5 days per week starting w/c 6th Sep (inc. Bootcamp: 13 September - 8 October 2010)

Oct: 5 days per week up until Friday 15th October (inc. rehearsals & performance in Delhi)

 

4. APPOINTMENT OF ROLE

The ‘Costume Assistant Brief’ will be circulated to relevant individuals in the industry as well as those individuals who have expressed an interest in such a position.

 

Meetings will be arranged between interested individuals and the Project Team where the following criteria will be considered prior to appointment:

 

• Provision of CV and details of previous relevant positions

• References from previous employers

• Ability to commit appropriate capacity between Sep and October 2010 (estimated to be at approx 35 days)

• Proposed fees for services
