XXth Commonwealth Games

23rd July - 3rd August 2014

Hillhead High School

The conference was a positive, fun experience and the S4 pupils benefited a lot as we had been involved in leadership work beforehand. Some of the things we gained:

- Good to split into teams to work with others

- Confidence to speak to others

- Nice t-shirts!!

- It was fun presenting games to group

- Lots of communication skills

- Working together and compromising through discussion.

Warn up got us laughing and moving and broke down some barriers We enjoyed the opportunity to get out to in a big external venue like Strathclyde University. Afterwards we felt positive and raring to go!

Back at school we discussed the event and planned our S1 Reward Event. We drew up a checklist and a list of roles for the day and in the lead up to the event and decided who was going to do what.

We planned fun activities for 24 pupils who had attended and worked hard at PE activities. We contacted and informed all pupils, decorated the areas (flags etc), welcomed them and supervised changing. We then got on to warming them up ready for their activities! We divided them into teams and gave instructions for the activities. We had produced certificates to give to the participants afterwards and organised for our head teacher to present them to the S1 pupils. We had a good time and the participants had a lot of fun!

The following week we held a debrief meeting to assess how the event had gone. We were well organised and our timing was OK (we over ran a little but caught up), we think that was normal for such a big event! Everybody in our group carried out their roles responsibly and any anxiety that we had at the start of the day disappeared quite quickly. Overall we were proud of how the event went and how the S1s enjoyed it.

Currently we are running with our Olympic theme and this will then link in our Commonwealth Games plans after London 2012. After the summer break, we will be focusing on our 2014 plans also linking with our Sports Leaders course.

This year the new S4 Sports Leaders hope to attend Lead 2014 and we will recommend it to them!
