The Three Years To Go activities

Stewart Mcgee

I have been volunteering for over 20 years and when I found out the Commonwealth Games were coming to Glasgow I was very excited. I knew this would be a great opportunity to become involved with one of the worlds biggest sporting events.

Volunteering opens opportunities to meet fantastic new people and gives you a sense of giving something back to the community. I volunteered on the Lord Provence Parade and enjoyed my experience so much that I volunteered again for the Three Years To Go celebrations in George Square. The atmosphere at the Three Years To Go activities was full of fun and excitement! The day attracted family’s from across the city to come and try out the 17 sports in the Glasgow 2014 sports programme. From pole vaulting to netball, there was something for everyone.

My role on the day was to assist in the lawn bowls activity and as a keen player of the sport I relished the task. I was at hand to help participants, explain the rules and give tips on how to improve their technique.

The feeling of being part of a team is very rewarding. Knowing that my help made the day a success is extremely satisfying. I would definitely like to be involved in future Glasgow 2014 events and ultimately I would love to be part of the XX Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony.
