The Lord Provence Parade

Tony Wilson

Having recently moved to Glasgow I was incredibly excited about becoming a volunteer for the Glasgow 2014 Lord Provence Parade. I have previously worked on the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games and knew it would be a fantastic opportunity to meet new people from a diverse background and a great way to get to know the city.

My day began by helping to set up the arrival area for the rest of the volunteers. I was put in charge of organising a group of 20 fellow volunteers and it was our role to ensure that everything was prepared for the day ahead. This was a great experience that helped me use my team leading and people management skills.

All 71 commonwealth countries were represented in the parade by their national flag. It was my role to carry the Welsh flag. The weather on the day was unusually hot for Scotland. This helped to draw the crowds and add to the excitement of the day. As the parade marched through George Square and the Glasgow city streets, the crowds of people cheered and clapped as we all passed. It was a joyous occasion and you could sense the immense pride from everyone involved.

The day was unforgettable. It gave me the chance to see things I have never seen before, meet people I had never met before and experienced things I had never experienced.

This involvement has given me the desire to join the 2014 Organising Committee and become part of the driving force behind the crucial operation, delivering the best Commonwealth Games to date.
