At Glasgow 2014 the road cyclists will be taking the tourist route through the streets of Glasgow, but at these speeds the sights will just be a blur.

Spectators will get the chance to cheer the flock of riders on as they navigate the route in unison.

Their tight formation betrays few clues to what tactics might be at play as they jostle for position.

Riders have their own particular strengths. Some excel when climbing hills, while others launch themselves into a devastating sprint to the finish line.

Their art is simple – restrict rivals’ gains and maximise their own in preferred terrain.

Watch out for those taking the path of least resistance in the slipstream of another rider, or searching for a break from the crosswinds.

Once the finish line is in sight, it’s every rider for themselves.
